ABOUT OS2TeX

OS2TeX is a distribution of Donald E. Knuth's typesetting system TeX
for the IBM operating system OS/2 Warp.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF OS2TeX?

- An installation program installs and configures the whole system

- User interface (shell) is supporting every step to create and work
  on TeX documents

- Automatic creation of the needed fonts for every output device
  controlled by an OS/2 printer driver.

- OS2TeX is based on the client-server architecture. Caused by this
  the consistency of the fonts is guaranteed, even if several DVI
  drivers are active at the same time.

- Tool for the driver independent integration of graphics into TeX
  documents by the transformation of graphics to fonts. The graphics
  can be scaled to several resolutions. Therefore it is possible to
  print documents with graphcis on printers with different 
  resolutions, e.g. 300 dpi and 360 dpi.

- OS2TeX is built up multi-threaded, including modern techniques of
  process synchronisation, therefore serveral steps can be done at 
  the same time.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

- OS/2 Warp V3, OS/2 Warp V4 fixpack 1 and higher.

- HPFS filesystem.

- 30 MB of free disk space.

HOW TO INSTALL OS2TeX?


1.   Unzip file os2tex.zip:

       unzip os2tex.zip

     You'll get 8 files:

       os2tex.ger
       os2tex.eng
       disk1.zip
       disk2.zip
       disk3.zip
       disk4.zip
       disk5.zip
       disk6.zip

2.1. Create a temporary directorie on hard disk:

       md temp

2.2  Change into that directory:

       cd temp

2.3  Unzip disk1.zip through disk4.zip:

       unzip -o disk1.zip
       unzip -o disk2.zip
       unzip -o disk3.zip
       unzip -o disk4.zip
       unzip -o disk5.zip
       unzip -o disk6.zip
      
2.4  Start the installation program and follow the instructions:

       install.exe

THE FIRST STEP AFTER INSTALLING OS2TEX

As mentioned above, OS2TeX is based on the client-server
architecture. A DVI previewer will try to establish a connection
to a font server for retrieving fonts that are part of your TeX
document. Therefore it is necessary to start the font server
before starting any DVI viewer. This is done through an icon
"metafont server", you will find within the OS/2-TeX folder.

If you forget to start the metafont server, any requests on fonts
will fail!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ENGLISH SPEAKING USERS

The English translation is not quite complete. All menus and dialogs
are written in English, but not the help files. A version including 
all help files written in English is planned in 1998.

OS2TeX is shareware and costs 70 DEM per copy. Updates will be free
of charge (subject for alterations). For holding these conditions, as
much as possible users should register OS2TeX!
